| Aaron / Winnard Addition | |||||
| With a second baby on the way, this family felt the need to expand their split level house. Adding up, rather than out, allowed the new master suite to enjoy the stunning view of Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.
The existing central stair was extended up one story at the southeast corner of the addition. A compact new bathroom occupies the southwest with a new corner window affording a view of the mountains. The new master bedroom runs the full width of the house, with the head of the bed at the east and floor to ceiling windows at the west. Beyond the glass is a new balcony where the owners can enjoy a beer while watching the sunset. New fiber cement siding with a rain screen shim covers the addition, protecting it from wind driven rain. Douglas fir windows are stained to expose the beauty of the wood at the interior. A bamboo floor in the master bedroom adds to the natural materials palette. This project earned a Built Green 3 Star certification for its selection of low toxic and resource efficient materials, and the builder's careful management of jobsite waste. |
